World University Games: Global athletes and sports officials experience Chinese cultural activities in free time
The Chengdu FISU Games serves as an opportunity for global athletes to communicate with and learn from each other. The athletes usually come to the experience center in the athletes' village where they live during the games in their spare time, especially in the evening.
ZHENG SONGWU Chengdu, Sichuan Province "Cultural activities taking place during the FISU Games, allowing global athletes to experience bamboo weaving, shadow puppetry, and paper cut artwork in their free time, which will hopefully help them gain a better understanding of Chinese culture."
The cultural activities run from morning to evening. Every room has masters and volunteers to guide the athletes. A Taekwondo athlete from Iran, was interested in making kites, as her father always made kites when she was little.
TAVAKOLI ANAHITA Iranian Taekwondo Athlete "In my country, culture is a big deal and it actually affects many people's lives. So I wanted to just see and learn Chinese culture to see the differences and enjoy it. And there are some similarities. Actually, as I told you over there, my father when he was a child, made kites in his hometown. You guys do it the same here and it was so nostalgic, something like that. It was so enjoyable. And I will try to do more."
For most of them, it was their first time to get close to Chinese hand-made art forms and it was challenging but enjoyable.
CANTUCCI GAIA Slovakian Fencing Athlete "It's a shadow puppetry, it's a panda, and they told me it's the first project with a panda. I saw shadow puppetry in the video before but I don't know how to make it. It also helps me to focus and try to be a little better."
HODGE DAVID ROBERT Australian Sports Officials, Team Leader "I just tried the paper cutting and I need more practice, but it was very challenging and very relaxing. I have three young children at home in Australia, so I think I'll give this to my youngest daughter. I think it's been an eye-opening experience to be here in China and experience the Chinese culture. I think for Australian, we have a lot of respect for the Chinese culture, particularly with all the different aspects and of your history. So it's wonderful to come here and learn more."
The FISU games bring different cultures together, allowing young people to exchange their ideas and get to know each other well.
